Earlier today, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed House Bill 5606 into law. Lots of people seem to be !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so we're going to clear it up for you.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Bill 5606 does not ban Tesla from selling vehicles directly to consumers in Michigan because Tesla was already banned from selling direct . We released the above infographic back in May. Tesla was banned from selling in MI then and it is still banned today.
Don't believe us? Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:
"This bill does not, as some have claimed, prevent auto manufacturers from selling automobiles directly to consumers at retail in Michigan — because this is already prohibited under Michigan law." - Gov. Rick Snyder
Here is what did change with Bill 5606:
1. Caps documentation fees at 5% or $200 for new-car dealers.
2. Allows manufacturers without their own dealerships in MI to sell through other franchise dealer networks.

The map shows that there are Tesla charging stations in MI, but no service stations yet. So I guess Tesla owners will have to go out of state if they need repairs that require Tesla experts. Anyone know if Tesla will send a technician to you for such repairs if there are no service stations in your area?

My boss has a Tesla, it was called in for the "AC pumps and NVH" update, there are no Tesla service centers in Vermont, so they sent a trailer and towed it to NY (Albany I think?) did the work, and towed it back free of charge.

According to the comment from JawzX2, it appears as if MI Tesla owners will be fine, just fine.

I think the consensus is, let the manufacturer choose their sales channels without the government getting in the middle of it. Fuck Michigan and fuck the lobbyists

Nothing, it will just be a hassle to get them serviced.

Nothing will happen to the MI residents that own Teslas. It's not illegal to own one there, or to service one, just for the manufacturer to sell you one directly.
So, if you are an MI resident and want to buy a Tesla, you can do so in the blue state on the map of your choosing, then legally register it in MI.
In most cases, you pay tax on a car based on the address it is registered to. So, buy one using your vacation home address in a Tesla-friendly state, thus completely fucking MI out of the tax $$$ they would otherwise get for not being idiots about the whole thing.

What? I've lived in three states and always pay the sales tax based on the state of registration. Either dealers do it for you, or if it is an out of state purchase it is on the registration form.
